## The quick answer

Kumbh Mela is a Hindu pilgrimage gathering associated with sacred river bathing. Its four principal locations are Prayagraj, Haridwar, Nashik–Trimbakeshwar and Ujjain. Each location has its own calendar and arrangements. Ujjain’s gathering is called Simhastha; a Prayagraj Mahakumbh schedule cannot be used to plan a visit to Ujjain.

## Where does Kumbh Mela take place?

The Ministry of Culture describes Kumbh as a cycle across four locations, tied to particular celestial configurations. There is no single annual date shared by all four cities. Always identify the city and edition before comparing travel information.

| Gathering | State | River setting |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Prayagraj | Uttar Pradesh | Triveni Sangam: Ganga, Yamuna and the traditionally understood Sarasvati |
| Haridwar | Uttarakhand | Ganga |
| Nashik–Trimbakeshwar | Maharashtra | Godavari |
| Ujjain / Simhastha | Madhya Pradesh | Shipra |

## Kumbh, Mahakumbh and Simhastha: what should a visitor understand?

“Kumbh” names the wider pilgrimage tradition. “Mahakumbh” is prominent in descriptions of the Prayagraj gathering, including the 2025 edition. “Simhastha” identifies Ujjain’s Kumbh tradition and is also used for Nashik–Trimbakeshwar. The city name matters even when two events share a name.

For booking decisions, use the full city and year rather than relying on the label alone. Ask a provider to put the destination, service, date and exact location in writing. This is particularly useful when an advertisement simply says “Kumbh package” or “Mahakumbh stay”.

Our publication uses Ujjain Mahakumbh as its name and Simhastha for the Ujjain event. We do not use that branding to imply that Ujjain and Prayagraj are the same gathering or that we are an official booking authority.

## The meaning of the gathering

The word kumbh refers to a pitcher. UNESCO’s inscription describes a living pilgrimage tradition centred on sacred bathing and shared cultural and spiritual practices; Kumbh Mela entered its Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2017.

For a visitor, the experience is not limited to a photograph of a crowd. There may be worship, teaching and encounters with different religious communities. Approach those activities as a guest. Seek permission before photographing individuals or entering a camp, and accept that some spaces or rituals are not open to everyone.

## Which calendar should you follow?

1. Choose the city first. “Ujjain” and “Prayagraj” are not interchangeable destinations.
2. Check the year on the announcement and on the document itself. Older festival maps and railway arrangements can remain searchable for years.
3. Identify who issued the programme. A travel seller’s dates are not the same as a final mela administration notice.
4. Distinguish festival dates, ceremonial bathing dates, public access times and temple booking slots. One does not guarantee another.
5. Recheck transport and access shortly before travel; a confirmed festival date does not fix the traffic plan.

## Planning for Ujjain Simhastha 2028

Begin with the people travelling: their walking comfort, need for rest and reason for visiting. Then decide which bookings can remain flexible while final arrangements are announced. Avoid building a tightly timed trip around an unverified bathing timetable.

A bathing visit, Mahakaleshwar darshan and a sightseeing trip are separate plans. Give each its own travel allowance and source check. If the available day is too short, keep the main purpose and drop optional stops rather than turning the journey into a race.

## Visit with respect for people and place

- Follow the route and bathing instructions in force on the day.
- Keep passages clear; do not stop a moving queue for photos or group discussions.
- Ask before recording a person, ceremony or private camp.
- Use designated waste collection and avoid leaving offerings or packaging in the river.
- Keep an agreed meeting point and a written accommodation contact, especially when travelling as a group.
